Tread Carefully: Winter is here!

Tread of winter tire

The Winter season is in full swing in Canada (at least for me, it is). With snow and rain ice and the temperature dropping way down, there are many things that a newcomer needs to learn to adapt to the country’s weather. Having a car to be able to commute is a boon. But once the temperature starts dipping, one needs to tread very carefully.

We buy full winter gear for us to wear- cap, gloves, jacket and snow boots. We need similar good tread tires for the car too. And it is not only about the tread but so much more. Here are a few pointers essential in choosing winter tires for your vehicle.

Why buy winter tires

When the temperature starts to dip, winter tires stay flexible. It is essential that to maintain proper grip during the chilly season. The tread pattern on these special tires is designed to repel the water to keep a grip on the road.

The winter tires help to prolong the life of all-season tires. The all-season tire material hardens when the temperature drops below 7 degrees, which is very dangerous when the roads turn slippery during snow days. Even 4WD, anti-lock brakes, etc., won’t help if the car slides on black ice or snow. These are good for accelerating and maneuvering the vehicle.

Select the tire

There are 2 parts

  • Rubber doughnut is the tire
  • The circular metal structure is the wheel rim

One can only buy the tires, but buying with the rim is easier to replace, even though it may cost more.

1. Shop Early

Inventory usually arrives in autumn; delaying would leave not many options to try from. As a rule, one should not wait for the first snow; the purchase needs to be made as soon as the temperature hits below 7.

2. Check the logo

Always keep in mind that the winter tires have a logo. They are certified to perform in the snow after being tested.

They are, however, not accepted in British Columbia, where the tread needs to be 3.5mm for safety on the road. The winter tires carry the blow symbol.

3. Studded tires

There are small metal studs embedded in the rubber. They provide a deeper grip with snow; however, they are noisy and damage the pavement. Before buying them, one needs to check as some parts of Canada prohibit them.

Should I Downsize?

Another question one needs to ask is- downsizing. One can easily save some money by picking a tire that is a size smaller than the usual 20- or 22-inch factory-installed wheel size. The rim on the downsized tires is smaller, but the narrow winter tire has deeper traction. But before you invest, always test the fit.

Maintain the winter tires

  • Check the air pressure regularly
  • Check the tread for wear and tear
  • Clean your tires regularly; build-up of salt erodes the tires
  • Cover them individually when you store
  • Change all 4 tires

The winter tires are an investment, no doubt! But it is a one-time investment that protects you and your family on the road on snow days. (Psst…it also brings down your monthly car insurance). Don’t think twice and install the winter tires when the temperature drops. Check out various stores to find the best deal, before you purchase your set.
